Philosophy

The PEiPL network formed in 2017. Whilst its members come from all walks of life, they share a common belief that everyone can benefit from philosophy, no matter the circumstances in which we find ourselves. If you think that philosophy is more than its academic canon, and should have a more prominent place in society, PEiPL might be the place for you!

We think that philosophical thought plays a vital role in public life. Every time we apply critical thinking to government policies, demand ethical behaviour from doctors and corporations, or teach children to ask ‘Why?’ we are doing philosophy. Working together, we can use philosophy to enrich the communities in which we live.

It is important to encourage philosophy to happen in places, and amongst people, not normally associated with it. Everyone is able to think philosophically if they put their mind to it. PEiPL supports existing programs that promote philosophical engagement in our schools, businesses, and government, and is also developing new ways to engage people with philosophy.

PEiPL has already helped to make some exciting things happen in Melbourne:

  • Public lectures from internationally renowned philosophers
  • Screenings of philosophical films
  • Professional development for teachers

There are many more events and programs under development, and as each comes to life, it helps spread the reach of philosophy a little further. If you want to help with existing projects, or have new ideas to share, then get in touch with PEiPL today!
